If you are coming from a major city within Italy you will have the option of booking a high-speed train called the Frecce. There are also Intercity trains available with more stops or Regional trains that service every town along the way.

Train options depend on which city you will be departing from as not all stations offer high-speed train service. For more details, arrival times, ticket pricing and bookings please visit the Trenitalia website.

Calabria is a popular stop over for tourists on their way to or returning from Sicily. Calabria has two main ports that arrive and depart from Messina, Sicily. If you are taking your car then you will need to use the Villa San Giovanni port which has ferries that accommodate cars as well as passengers. If you don’t have a car then you can also use the Reggio Calabria port which only has passenger ferries. Both ports go directly to Messina and from there you can board another ferry which will take you to the Eolian Islands or you can walk to the train station which is nearby and make your way to your next destination.

For more information on ferries please visit the following websites:

If you plan on arriving by motorboat or sailboat then the best ports to dock in are Tropea, Vibo Marina, Palmi and Roccella. You can also dock at the Reggio Calabria port, but it’s a large port in the city so not as picturesque as the other.

If you are interested in boat charters in Calabria, Sicily or to the Eolian Islands please contact us. We can also arrange private boat taxi transfers to the Eolian Islands.

Calabria is wonderful place to discover by car and a necessity for freedom to move around if you are not travelling with a packaged tour. Train service, buses and taxi’s can be unreliable and in some towns non-existent so it is highly recommended to rent a car. Please keep in mind though that driving in Calabria is not for the faint of heart as roads and highways in Calabria are some of the worst in all of Italy and street signage can be confusing.
